Arun Jaitely Given Additional Defence Minister Portfolio

Budget 2017 by Arun Jaitley: Main Highlights

President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the resignation of Manohar Parrikar. Manohar Parrikar who was a defense minister stepped down from his post and regisned. He has been ordered by Prime Minister to resign from the post of Defense Minister.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan released an official statement saying, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri Manohar Parrikar, from the Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution

Arun Jaitley is now assigned the charge of Ministry of Defence in addition to his existing portfolios. He is amongst the cabinet minister who is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was earlier in 2014 appointed as Defence Minister when Modi government came into power. He was in the position before Manohar Parrikar. He was also a cabinet minister during Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He then handled law and commerce and industry.

Manohar Parrikar on the other hand resigned to become the new Cheif Minister in Goa. Toda, he will take oath in Goa. Other leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Sing, Nitin Gadari are also expected to attend the Parrikar’s swearing ceremony.

Arun Jaitley has been given aditional charge of defence whereas Manohar Parrikar had wokred in the ministry is now given the chance to work as the CM of Goa on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice.

BJP in the elections won 13 seats, but later wih colaboration with local parties and independents formed a majority and won the Goa elections. Whrereas Congess, won 17 seats and was unable to form the majority to win the elections.
