Sasikala AIADMK general secretary surrenders herself in the court for having the disproportionate assets. She surrendered before a special court at the premises of Parappana Agrahara central jail on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Why the case shifted from Tamil Nadu to Bengaluru?
The case was shifted from Tamil Nadu to Bengaluru in 2003 for a fair trial.
She has been termed with 4 years of jail for disproportionate asset case.
The lady surrendered before Judge Aswatha Narayana on Tuesday evening.
The trial procedure lasted for an hour and she walked to the jail from the court along with Ilavarasi (her co-accused).
Navaneetha Krishnanan, AIADMK Rajya Sabha member and supporter of Sasikala.says “The immediate requirement was to surrender before the court and Sasikala has complied with the order,”
The special court was shifted from the City Civil Court premises to Parappana Agrahara Jail and the judge Justice Aswasrha Narayana reached the court at 3pm.
M Tambidurai Senior AIDMK leader and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha consulted Sasikala’s lawyers and suggested filing plea before the trail court seeking extension of time on the grounds of her poor health condition. Supreme court rejected the plea.
Few pleas by Sasikala:
Sasikala’s lawyers submitted before the special court that she should be given Class-1 facility in the jail and her health condition including diabetes and age related issues should be taken into consideration. She also requested for mineral water and a separate toilet in jail.
Class 1 facility:
Class 1 cell comes with privileges like a private television, home-cooked food and non-vegetarian meals twice a week. She had also asked for space to meditate and round-the-clock medical when required.
The Supreme Court denied her request.
Other securities arrangements for the safety:
Police had made elaborate security arrangements in the areas surrounding Parappana Agrahara jail. Five platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) had been deployed.
She has been labeled as prisoner number 9234. Slept on the floor on her first night in jail inspite of the pleas mentioned in her case. It is also being said that she is sharing her prison with a mate, but that mate is not known to anybody. it might be her sister-in-law Ilavarasi.
After her request being denied, an official said “There will not be any special privileges for Sasikala. At the most she will be counseled so she can adjust to the jail,”
