After days of hustling and bustling, the Samajwadi party and the Congress has finally announced their pre-poll alliance ahead of Uttar Pradesh assembly election at a joint press conference here on Sunday.
As per the alliance agreement, Congress will contest from 105 seats while SP will have the remaining 298 seats. The alliance was announced in the presence of Congress state party chief Raj Babbar, SP state president Naresh Uttam and SP vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda.
Announcing the tie-up, Naresh uttam said that the idea behind the alliance is to uproot the communal BJP from the state and make UP a leading state. He said, ‘The country’s secular forces will become stronger when Akhilesh Yadav becomes CM again.’
Raj Babbar criticized BJP for Demonetization and said that the move has created hardships for the general public and now people have opportunity to teach the party a lesson.
Asserting the secular agenda of the alliance, he said that tie-up will thwart BJP’s divisive politics and will boost secularism and promote communal and social harmony.
Alliance is confirmed just before SP released its manifesto on Sunday.
Congress big wigs intervened to seal the alliance
The alliance between SP and Congress was looming in uncertainty when Congress big wigs intervened in the process. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her daughter Priyanka Vadra and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azaad negotiated the deal from the Congress side. Priyanka Vadra dialed Dimple Yadav, wife of CM Akhilesh Yadav and she also spoke to Akhilesh Yadav as well to finalize the alliance.
The high level talks provide the party negotiators with a ground to work on the alliance which finally led to the tie-up.
Talks have been going on for long time but announcement got delayed as both parties were unable to build consensus on seat sharing pattern.
After alliance, Congress releases first list of Candidates
Hours after Congress and SP finalized their pre-poll alliance, Congress came out with its first list of Candidates for UP election. The list has 41 candidates, out of which eight are Muslim candidates, which also include the name of Imraan Masood who was jailed for his alleged hate speech during the Lok Sabha elections.
Reacting on the Congress-SP alliance, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi said that both SP and Congress are trying to cover up their weaknesses.
Attacking Akhilesh Yadav, he said, ‘Akhilesh yadav is trying to cover-up his mis-governance and he has failed to fulfill his promises.’ He termed the alliance as ‘bunch of contradictions.’
UP is bound to go on polls from February 11 to March 8.
